Sister Library in Jaffna DISCUSSION

Sister Library in Jaffna | Discussion

Join us for an evening of reflection, dialogue, and exchange with writers, artists, and activists from Jaffna. Nilani Joseph, T. Krishnapriya, Angel Queentus, Anutharsi Gabilan, and Rani Sritharan will come together to share their experiences, perspectives, and creative practices shaped by life in the Northern Peninsula.

The conversation, moderated by Tisa Thiruchelvam, will explore themes of memory, identity, resilience, and the many ways women articulate their voices within and beyond their communities.

Open to all, this gathering invites audiences to listen, learn, and engage with narratives that are both deeply personal and resonant across wider contexts.

This event is part of the event series Sister Library in Jaffna. The project is funded by the Franco-German Cultural Fund. The Fund was set up in 2003 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty of friendship between France and West Germany and it promotes Franco-German cooperation by providing support for cultural and artistic projects.

Sister Library in Jaffna

Sister Library in Jaffna

Sister Library, led by Indigenous artist aqui Thami, is a vibrant art initiative that goes beyond the conventional concept of a library. Rooted in the celebration of women, it intertwines literature with community involvement to nurture diverse and inclusive connections. As an evolving and generative artwork, Sister Library is a space dedicated to celebrating female creativity—housing works by women writers, artists, and zine makers.

After its first stops at the Lakmahal Community Library in Colombo, the Alliance Française de Kandy and the JDA Perera Gallery in Colombo, the Sister Library is now heading to Jaffna. From 30 August to 27 September 2025, it will be accessible to the public at Kälam – A Space for Cultural Encounters in Jaffna. For the opening weekend, we have planned a range of activities, especially for schoolchildren, along with a workshop at the University and further exciting events, we will share more details soon.

Sister Library is being realized in partnership with Everystory, an organisation committed to amplifying underrepresented voices through literature and storytelling.

As part of the collaboration, Everystory has contributed important Sri Lankan writing to the library’s collection. Additionally, the Goethe-Institut and Alliance Française have expanded the selection by adding feminist literature from Germany and France, translated into English.

The project is funded by the Franco-German Cultural Fund. The Fund was set up in 2003 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty of friendship between France and West Germany and it promotes Franco-German cooperation by providing support for cultural and artistic projects.

Sister Library

Sister Library at JDA Perera Gallery | Books we Carry – Book Presentation | Favorites from the Sister Library

📚 Join us for two evenings of book presentations as part of Sister Library, hosted within the exhibition Empowerment: Arts and Feminisms. Led by Indigenous artist Aqui Thami, Sister Library is a vibrant art initiative that reimagines the library as a feminist space—merging literature with community to honor the creativity of women writers, artists, and zine makers.
🌍 In Sri Lanka, the project is funded by the Franco-German Cultural Fund and presented in partnership with Everystory Sri Lanka, an organization amplifying underrepresented voices through literature. Everystory has contributed Sri Lankan works to the collection, while the Goethe-Institut and Alliance Française have added feminist literature from Germany and France, translated into English.
📖 Across two evenings, we’ll share favorite titles from the bookshelf. Stefan Winkler, Director of the Goethe-Institut, will reflect on reading science fiction—traditionally male-dominated—and spotlight Sultana’s Dream by Rukeya Hussain, The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, and Kindred by Octavia Butler. He’ll also introduce Before She Sleeps by Bina Shah and Utopias of the Third Kind by Vandana Singh.
👥 On the second evening, Thadini Liyanage and Raeesa Samsudeen from Everystory will lead a session on The Vegetarian by Han Kang. They will be joined by Cécile Hoorelbeke and Vidura Rodrigo from Alliance Française de Colombo, who will present their favorites, including Frozen Women by Annie Ernaux and Poems of the First Buddhist Women, translated by Charles Hallisey.
🎨 The event is part of the public programme of Empowerment: Art and Feminisms, a travelling South Asian exhibition featuring 31 feminist artists and collectives. On view from 4–11 August 2025 at JDA Perera Gallery, the show explores gender, identity, care, resistance, and inclusion. It is curated by Andreas Beitin, Katharina Koch, and Uta Ruhkamp, and co-produced by Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg and Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai.
